How utterly, utterly depressing it all is. What is wrong with everyone?

I’m just off to Beachy Head! Pigs in blankets just aren’t enough of a consolation!

And it's all being cheered on by the brexity boomers in Britain. Funny how the world turns. Not long ago a generation of Brits risked their lives to stop the rise of fascism across Europe. And now their children's generation are openly cheering on the resurgence of European fascists with glee.

I feel like the worlds gone mad. All I want to do is raise my family without worry. Thanks for the articles. It’s like a bubble of sanity in a world of lunacy.

Such stressful times. The riots in Ireland are concerning too. I think a lot rests in Britain on the capability of Labour to bring about change.

Small contribution to the last section hopefully but I finished reading How Westminster Works... this week. I bought it despite thinking "I read loads of Ian's stuff, is there really going to be much that I haven't seen before?" but really enjoyed it, just the right amounts of illuminating and enraging. The Afghanistan chapter in particular was infuriating.

Meloni’s accession to power in Italy has not turned out to be as disastrous for democracy as feared because she’s had to accept the realpolitik that ruling is different from campaigning.

I agree Milei has have wandered right off the reservation but might not the necessity for compromise also prove to be essential for Wilders in Holland?

Curious to know what your thoughts are on Ukrainian accession to the EU had there been no war. It seemed like it was nowhere near, no closer than, say, Turkey, due to levels of corruption, rule of law, that kind of thing. I don't understand how those things could have improved while under war conditions, is this talk of making Ukraine a candidate real, or is it just shaking a stick at Putin? If the war ended tomorrow would they go straight to the back of the queue?

Puzzled by your references to Ukraine’s “ascension” to the EU; should that not be accession?
